Charles Anderson Lawn Care is celebrating 40 years of service within Halifax County and the surrounding areas.
Owner Charles Anderson said that when the business first began in 1983, they started with push mowers. Since then, Anderson has nearly tripled his amount of employees after just beginning with his mother, who was in charge of simple weed trimming. Due to health-related issues, his son, Bruce, joined and expanded the company.
“He really changed the dynamics of the company,” Anderson said proudly.

Starting and maintaining a lawn care business has not always been an easy task.
“I worked full-time but cut grass on the side,” he noted. “It was a lot of work.”
Charles Anderson Lawn Care is constantly looking to hire new employees.
“We only had five to 10 people working (at first),” he explained. “We always hire professional people even if there’s not a position for them.”
He said it’s easy to find a place for someone “if they’re willing to work.”
Some employees have been with the company for 10, 15 and 20 years or more.
Charles Anderson Lawn Care was voted No. 1 in The Gazette-Virginian’s 2022 and 2023 Best of the Best Awards for best landscaping company.
They have been able to provide services such as outdoor lighting, irrigation, hardscape (patios, sidewalks, outdoor kitchens) for numerous customers in North Carolina and Pittsylvania County.
Anderson Turf Management was created eight years ago as a subdivision of the company, specializing in creating and maintaining sport fields (soccer, football and baseball).
Anderson added that it is important to fertilize lawns more than once a year and he said this service has become very popular since the company’s opening a few decades ago.
“Back then people maybe fertilized their yard once a year, now we have programs that help people get their lawns fertilized,” he explained.
“We enjoy cutting grass, but that is a small percentage of what we do,” he explained. “I’m really proud of that.”
The company is located at 2231 James D. Hagood Highway, and is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
