A local entrepreneur and contractor, Ben Hilty, is breathing new life into the former Boston Lumber Company building.

Hilty’s new business, The Tire Shop, opened its doors at 1099 Philpott Road (U.S. Highway 58 west) in South Boston on Feb. 17.

“It’s been my dream to open a tire shop here, and we’re finally doing it,” Hilty said.

The shop offers tires for a wide variety of needs, including car and truck tires, industrial tires, earth-moving equipment tires and tires for lawn and garden.

The Tire Shop will focus on offering tires for larger trucks and has plenty of room to service semi-trucks.

“We have more parking than any other tire shop in town,” Hilty pointed out.

The Tire Shop also will offer roadside service for tires. Hilty’s own need for roadside assistance one day led him to open his first tire shop in Wheatland, Wyoming.

He spoke with a local shop and was informed that they did not offer road service, so he decided then and there to start his own business.

“I drove around and found a building that was available,” Hilty said. “Three days later, I owned the building and three weeks later, we opened up. It went from two people to five full-time people, and last year, we did over $1 million in tire sales.”

Hilty’s wife Cindy now runs the tire shop in Wyoming.

Patrick Hite, part owner of Hilty’s tire business, and his wife, Tosha, moved from Wyoming to South Boston to help Hilty get the tire shop here up and running.

Tire work comes naturally to Hite, whose family has been in the tire business for three generations.

As a child, Hite worked in his grandfather’s tire shop, at the same location where Hilty opened up his shop in Wyoming.

Hilty has family in South Boston, and prior to opening The Tire Shop, he built pole barns in the area from 2001-2010. A contractor by trade, Hilty does excavation, concrete and dirt work.

In addition to offering tires, Hilty plans to expand his business at The Tire Shop next month and open a showroom for the sale of lumber, carrying on the building’s traditional purpose as the former site of Boston Lumber Company. The Tire Shop also offers automotive detailing work: wash and wax.

The Tire Shop is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The shop’s number during regular business hours is 579-0140. For roadside service after hours, call 579-8416. Those interested in purchasing lumber should call 517-1287.
