Thomas R. Elliott, CEO of Elliott Electric of South Boston and Danville, announced a partnership to establish an annual scholarship of $5,000 to the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation.
Elliott Electric, founded in 1946, has employed hundreds of local tradesmen and women over the years and currently employs over 100 professionals in the fields of electric, plumbing and HVAC.
The Elliott Electric Scholarship is designated for financial assistance to students from Halifax County who wish to pursue education and workforce training in the fields of electrical, HVAC and technology. The SVHEF has provided scholarship opportunities for the past 27 years and is the local source for higher education in South Boston.
“I was pleased and proud when my partners in Danville heartily endorsed the creation of this fund,” Elliott said. “What a practical way to support and enrich our community, encourage and assist students, men and women of all ages, to train or retrain for rewarding and lucrative lifetime opportunities in technology and the trades.”

In addition to supporting scholarship opportunities, Elliott Electric assigned $1,000 to the Career Tech Academy to support staffing and materials for their camps and programs. The CTA provides hands-on workforce training for high school students from Halifax, Mecklenburg and Charlotte counties.
T. Chris Elliott, CFO and partner in the Danville operation, added a personal gift. His contribution of $2,500 allocates $500 to the CTA and the remaining balance of $2,000 to the SVHEF Elliott Electric Scholarship.
Chris Elliott is a proponent of hands-on training.
“Careers in construction and the trades are financially and personally rewarding,” he said. “It’s critical to introduce young students to the excitement and satisfaction of designing, building and maintaining systems and equipment that make our lives work to our advantage.”
Jeff Shelton, vice president and partner in Danville, stated, “Construction, the trades, maintenance, technology, security and service drive this economy. Elliott Electric’s continued growth and success depend on the knowledge and experience of our men and women in the field.”
Tommy Elliott added, “Technicians can learn a lot on the job, but advanced education and training move our people up the pay scale ladder quickly. We look forward to hiring these students someday soon.”
As programs in the trades are added to the curriculum at SVHEC, enrollment has increased.
Dr. Betty Adams was overjoyed with Elliott Electric’s commitment as the additional funds for workforce training will provide more opportunities for students to achieve ready-to-work skills for today’s industries.
“This is wonderful news for those living in and around Halifax County,” said SVHEF Board Chair Monica Edmonds. “We appreciate the support from Elliott Electric in pursuing our mission of making way for our community members to receive job skills and a high-level education,”
