Downtown South Boston now has a new addition to its growing Business District. Entrepreneur Roxanne Porter has changed the face of the historic district by bringing her community wellness center for children, First Step Youth Services, LLC, to the area.

The mission of First Step Youth Services, LLC is to provide a safe environment to empower children and develop lifelong learning. Eligible children under the age of 17 are being taught ways to deal with focusing on problems as well as anger management skills through after school programs and summer services.

A qualified mental health professional has been hired, and Porter employs psychotherapeutic interventions in combination with daily skills such as problem solving and community responsibility to assist children battling mental illnesses such as ADD, ADHD, autism and Aspergers.

Porter not only wants to help children, but parents as well by distributing literature and holding weekly work sessions.

Porter acquired the Youth Services space, next to Fincher’s Inc. on North Main Street, in October of 2017. Since then, she has transformed the nearly 3,000 square foot space, ensuring it will meet the needs of the children she serves. Children have access to a reading nook, chalkboard wall, movie room and computer lab.

Porter’s passion for First Step Youth Services, LLC comes from personal experience. As a single mom of a child with ADHD, she’s dedicated herself to finding ways to enable her son to succeed.

That’s where the First Step Youth Services, LLC idea began.

“I think it’s important to have a business you’re passionate about. I know I’m not the only one who’s been through this,” Porter said.
