New construction is moving forward at a snail’s pace in Halifax County, partly because of wet weather the past year and partly because of issues normally surrounding construction projects such as rezoning.

For instance, The Halifax County Board of Supervisors approved rezoning of a parcel in Riverdale from A-1 to B-2 in June of 2017 allowing for construction of an O’Reilly Automotive Store, after receiving assurances from an O’Reilly representative that a sewer line running through the property built in 1973 that serves six homes would not be compromised.

The new O’Reilly Auto Parts store, located at 1145 and 1155 Huell Matthews Highway on the site of a former tobacco warehouse, is currently under construction, but it is dealing with delays due to continuing wet weather.

Two restaurants are under construction in the area, including McDonald’s in the Centerville area and Mexico Viejo Mexican Grill, currently located at 1020 Bill Tuck Highway in the Riverdale Plaza Shopping Center, that will move to a building currently under construction on the site of the former Ed’s Honda, immediately to the east of the shopping center.

Probably most visible to passers-by is ongoing construction related to renovation of the historic Halifax courthouse.

After a year of negotiation and cost increases, renovation of the historic Halifax courthouse and construction of a new commonwealth’s attorney’s office appear to have taken shape by the end of 2018.

A number of change orders for courthouse renovation has passed muster with the Halifax County Board of Supervisors, as have modifications involving the commonwealth’s attorney’s office being added on as part of the courthouse project.

In December, supervisors approved construction of a three-story office to house the commonwealth’s attorney at an estimated cost of $2,659,381.

Architectural drawings show the prosecutor’s office will be connected to the right side of the courthouse, and the existing 4,800 square foot building will have to be torn down to make way for the new commonwealth’s attorney’s office.

The timeline for completion of the project is September 2020.
