The YMCA of South Hampton Roads has welcomed a new executive director to the Y family.
Meagan Peterson began her role as executive director for the YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County on Nov. 28.
Peterson is responsible for day-to-day operations and providing cause-driven leadership, vision and direction to the South Boston Y team.
Her leadership will help bring the vision and values of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads to life. She will also oversee staff and volunteer management, fiscal management, financial development, facility and equipment stewardship and personal-professional development. Working closely with board members, she is also responsible for developing and driving continuous improvement and community engagement activities.
Throughout Peterson’s professional career, she has consistently focused on families and community. She began her career in Kodiak, Alaska, providing support as a liaison between military families and command.
She continued to develop the lives of others as the director of the Learning Care Group, transforming their underperforming centers into area-leading facilities. She has also worked as an education services facilitator for the U.S. Navy, providing training to military families in areas such as stress management, anger management, suicide prevention, communication and parenting classes.
Peterson lived in many places, from Alaska to Connecticut, South Carolina to Texas and Virginia. She returned home to North Carolina, where she was born and raised.
