Mr. Charles Albert Bates III of Vernon Hill passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021. He was born in Halifax County on May 5, 1936 and was 84 years old. He was the son of the late Charles Albert Bates Jr. and the late Sue Barnes Bates and was married to Geneva Womack Bates who survives.

He was a lifetime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan, loved the beach, growing tomatoes, and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Geneva Womack Bates of Vernon Hill; his son, Richard W. “Ricky” Bates of Vernon Hill; his daughter, Susan B. McLamb and husband Chuck of Vernon Hill; four grandchildren, Richard W. “Ric” Bates Jr. and wife Rhonda of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, Charles A. “Chuck” Bates V and wife Mandy of Alton, Sidney E. McLamb of Vernon Hill and Jacob “Jake” A. McLamb of Vernon Hill; four great grandchildren, Cooper and Ginger Rogers of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, and Maylee M. Bates and Hattie E. Bates of Alton; and his twin brother, Robert W. Bates and wife Helen of Vernon Hill.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles Albert “Al” Bates IV.

A funeral service was held on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Hanson conducting the service.

Burial followed in the church cemetery. In keeping with the CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19, they recommended the wearing of face masks and social distancing.

The family received friends immediately following the service and other times at his home.
