Mecklenburg County’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 16, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
That’s an additional three deaths since an update on Friday.
There are 167 cases of COVID-19 reported in Mecklenburg as of Sunday morning’s update from the health department. The data is available online each day by about 9 a.m. and is based on information received by 5 p.m. the previous day. Health officials have long noted a lag in data reporting, especially deaths.
On Saturday, Virginia crossed the 1,000-death milestone. As of Sunday, 1,009 people have died from COVID-19, the health department reports.
Another milestone on Sunday: the total number of cases in the state surpassed 30,000. The state now reports a total of 30,388 cases of the severe respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus. That number includes positive and probable case. A probable case refers to someone showing the symptoms of COVID-19 who’s had contact with someone who’s tested positive.
