Mecklenburg County recorded its 20th death attributed to COVID-19 in the latest Virginia Department of Health data released Thursday morning.

The number of cases in Mecklenburg has increased each day this week and now stands at 185. Halifax County’s caseload remains unchanged since Tuesday at 29.

As of Thursday morning, the health department reported 34,137 cases of the illness caused by the coronavirus. That’s an increase of 1,229 since Wednesday’s report. The death toll in Virginia is at 1,099.

The Southside Health District that includes Halifax, Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties has not seen a dramatic rise in testing even as state leaders tout ramped up efforts across the commonwealth. As of Thursday, 1,651 tests have been administered to residents in the Southside Health District. In Southside, the current seven-day positivity rate is at a 14.4%.
