The number of new COVID-19 cases has slowed within the last week, Virginia Health Department data shows.
Halifax County added two new causes of the illness caused by the coronavirus since Tuesday’s report for a total of 108. That marks 13 new cases in a week. There were two dozen cases added during the same time frame in the previous week.
However, cases and outbreaks continue to climb in the neighboring Pittsylvania-Danville Health District. On Thursday, health department data reported five new outbreaks in that area including one in a nursing home. In two days, Danville and Pittsylvania County have added 54 new cases, but that’s after reporting no new cases on Tuesday. Health department officials have noted a lag in data postings.
The health department labeled Danville and Pittsylvania County as a surge area in report last week.
Across the state, there were 81,237 cases reported Thursday morning, an increase of 844 from Wednesday’s total. Those figures also include what the health department classifies as probable cases, meaning someone is showing signs of COVID-19 and had contact with someone else who has tested positive.
