Usually when school is in session, Sinai Elementary is one of the Halifax County Public Schools that participates in a free grocery market with the help of the organization FeedMore. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the closure of schools, local schools have implemented a drive-thru market.
The program was first brought to the area at South Boston Elementary. FeedMore, a Central Virginia core hunger-relief organization, was birthed in 2008 after the former merger of Central Virginia Food Bank and Meals on Wheels.
Now with school no longer being in session, staff at local schools are gearing up with masks and gloves to deliver boxes of food to families in need. Families of students have a schedule of when the grocery market is usually held, and Francine Davis, principal of Sinai Elementary said she sends out alerts to remind parents.
Recently, six staff assisted Davis with giving out boxes of food and other supplies from their care closet of school supplies and hygiene products to at least 49 families.
