Halifax County recorded two new cases of COVID-19 in Tuesday morning’s data update from the Virginia Department of Health.

Halifax now has 29 cases of the severe respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus. Next door in Mecklenburg County there are 178 reported cases. An additional death was logged in Tuesday’s update for a total of 17 in Mecklenburg.

Pittsylvania County, Henry County and Martinsville also increased cases Tuesday.

In Virginia, the department reports 32,145 cases Tuesday compared to 31,140 on Monday — an increase of 1,005. Those numbers included probable cases meaning someone shows signs of COVID-19 and has come in contact with another individual who has tested positive for the virus.

There are 1,041 deaths across the state linked to COVID-19, an increase of 27 since Monday’s report. The health department has long noted a lag in result postings, especially deaths. The department updates data online at about 9 a.m. daily based on information received by 5 p.m. the previous day.

The Southside Health District that encompasses Halifax, Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties reports 96 test results from Sunday, the third highest amount of testing so far. Those numbers may include a series of free testing conducted Saturday or increased testing at long-term care facilities.
