A late spring tradition returns Saturday with the 28th annual Virgilina Summerfest celebration in downtown Virgilina.
Everyone is invited to this year’s event this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Summerfest, which is the Virgilina VFD’s primary fundraiser, will kick off the day with a parade down Florence Avenue at 11 a.m.
The life of the late Halifax County Forester Alex Williamson of Alton will be celebrated at Summerfest as Williamson’s family members serve as grand marshals for the Saturday event.
Williamson died Saturday, March 13, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem following a freak accident on I-40 near Mocksville in Davie County, North Carolina. He was 59 years old.
Summerfest organizers said they plan to honor Williamson’s memory as well as celebrate his life throughout the day.
Following the grand marshal float in this year’s parade will be Smoky Bear and brush trucks from Halifax and Granville counties.
Saturday’s Summerfest will feature arts and crafts vendors, live local music between 1 and 5 p.m. on the big stage and plenty of food and beverages.
Summerfest is the perfect opportunity to sample ever-popular Brunswick stew and enjoy barbeque sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, fried chicken and barbecue pork plates and homemade desserts that will be available from 2 p.m. until.
Games and rides will entertain the youngsters, and a performance by the Konnection Band and a street dance from 6 to 9 p.m. will cap off the event for adults.
Special visitors Gomer Pyle and Barney Fife are expected in Virgilina Saturday with the Mayberry police car making an appearance.
Also on Saturday a LifeFlight Helicopter will be on display.
Special prize drawings will be held at 9 p.m. for a cash prize of $1,000 and for a “Log Cabin” quilt made and donated by Elizabeth Smith and quilted by Doris Hudson.
So bring a lawn chair, a healthy appetite, put on those dancing shoes and get into the swing of summer at the Virgilina VFD’s 28th Annual Summerfest celebration this Saturday.
Proceeds will benefit the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Association.
