School finance director not certified public accountant

Newly hired Halifax County Public Schools Director of Finance Jay Camp is not a certified public accountant as previously reported when he was hired in July.
Camp confirmed Friday he is not a CPA, although he has worked for 32 years as an accountant and worked several years under his father, Harold Camp, who is a CPA.
“I have performed work under his supervision,” Camp said, adding the situation has been “embarrassing,” and he stressed he has “never ever done anything” as a CPA.
When Camp was hired in July to fill the finance director’s position, School Superintendent Dr. Merle Herndon incorrectly informed The Gazette-Virginian that he was a CPA.
“That’s my fault. I will take full responsibility for that. He’s an accountant,” Herndon said Friday.
