Walter Deaner “W. D.” Monroe, 84, of Smith Street, Brookneal passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Hillcreek Circle, Midlothian. He was the husband of the late Emma Sowell Monroe.
Mr. Monroe was born in Brookneal, Aug. 10, 1927 a son of the late James Monroe and Elizabeth Jennings Monroe. He was a member of Brookneal United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Foster Fuels.
He is survived by two sons, Sandy R. Monroe of Lynchburg and Michael P. Monroe (Lauren) of Midlothian; one daughter, Peggy M. Abbitt (George) of Chula Vista, California; six grandchildren, Jennifer Smith, Megan Bierhorst, Tyler Abbitt, Allison Monroe, Jon Austin Monroe and Heather Mayberry; three great-grandchildren, Colin and Danielle Smith, Brooks Mayberry; a special niece, Deborah Hamlett (Henry) of Lynchburg.
He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Travis Abbitt and Justin Hamlett.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Wickliffe Cemetery by the Rev. Matthew Killmon.
The family received friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal and at his residence other times.
