John Lewis Terry was born Dec. 12, 1942 in Halifax County. The Lord called him to his heavenly home April 23, 2012. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at New Bethel Baptist Church, 4226 Mountain Road, Halifax. The Rev. M. DeWayne Mack will be officiating.
The family will receive friends and relatives before the service from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Mr. Terry is the third of eight children, and was preceded in death by his father, the late Pearlie T. Terry; his mother, Lucille Logan Terry; and his brother, William (Billy) Terry.
He leaves to cherish his memories four sons, Jonathan Terry, Manuel Terry, Jason Terry, and Benjamin Terry, his three grandchildren; Qaylean Terry, Kieliel Terry, and Azuri Terry; three brothers, Pearlie T. (Barbara) Terry, Stillman (the late Brenda) Terry, and Velton Terry; three sisters, Mary (John) Sweeney, Lucille (Charles) Cheek, and Lethia (Harold) Young; seven nephews; five nieces; and a host of great-nephews and nieces, and relatives.
In 1967 Mr. Terry was called into the US Armed Service. His belief in God and prayer sustained him. He served in the Vietnam War with the 1st Air CAV. Division, and he received two Purple Heart awards for his honorable duty. After his tour of duty he returned home to reside in Alexandria.
Greene Funeral Home of Alexandria and Jeffress Funeral Home of South Boston are assisting the family with arrangements.
