Mr. Stuart O’Neil Loftis of South Boston died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at his home. He was born Jan. 8, 1923 in Halifax County the son of the late Aubrey O’Neil Loftis and Dorothy Ramsey Loftis. His wife, Virginia Hood Loftis, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Loftis was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church where he served as superintendent.
He was a graduate of Turbeville High School, served as an airplane mechanic in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Dan River Community Ruritan Club where he was Ruritan of the year in 2010.
Mr. Loftis is survived by one sister, Nelda L. Ingram and husband Ira of South Boston; one step-daughter, Mary Yearty of Scottsburg; a devoted son-in-law and best friend Joseph Frank Yearty of Scottsburg; two step-sons, Charles Waltman and wife Carolyn of South Boston and Roy Waltman and wife Edith of Wilmington, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
Three brothers, Curtis G. Loftis, Stanford A. Loftis and Russell C. Loftis; two stepdaughters, Virginia Hackney and Catherine King; one step-granddaughter, Sherrie Blanks; and one stepson, Elmer Waltman, also preceded Mr. Loftis in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Loftis will be held Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck officiating. Burial will follow in Virgilina Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home for one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of Joseph and Mary Yearty, 8242 James D. Hagood Hwy, Scottsburg.
