Mr. Edwin Augustus “Ned” Stebbins Jr. of 6189 Birch Elmo Road, Elmo died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at his home. He was born in Halifax County on July 25, 1935 and was 77 years old.
He was the son of the late Edwin Augustus Stebbins Sr. and the late Elizabeth Osborne Stebbins and was married to Venetia Whitt Stebbins.
He was an active member of Arbor Baptist Church, the Halifax Heritage Festival and was a member of Woodmen of the World Lodge #106.
Ned was a retired tobacconist with Universal Leaf. He loved auto racing, but his real passion was for fixing and restoring old tractors and hit and miss motors.
Mr. Stebbins is survived by his wife, Venetia W. Stebbins, of Elmo; one daughter, Tracey Stebbins Smith, of Danville; two grandchildren, Jordan Elizabeth Smith and Caroline Stebbins Smith, both of Danville; three sisters, Julia Stebbins Carrington of South Boston, Nancy Stebbins Lee of Clarksville and Mary Louise Stebbins of South Boston; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; his best buddies and constant companions, Vanna White, Shewee, Spot Check Willie and Harold Melvin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister, Elizabeth Stebbins Creath.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Arbor Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Davis conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Following the burial, a small reception will be held in the church fellowship hall.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at his home.
