Mrs. Catherine Foster Green Matthews of South Boston died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Runt and Pratt Adult Care in Lynchburg at the age of 87.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Clover on Jan. 31, 1925 to the late Mr. John Foster and Mrs. Sallie Scott Foster. She was first married to the late Mr. Jewel Green and later married the late Mr. James Matthews. For over 60 years Mrs. Matthews resided in New York where she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Upon returning to Halifax County in 2012, she joined First Baptist Church on Ferry Street.
Survivors include one son, Mr. Jewel Green, of New York, N.Y.; one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Green Tucker, and husband Alex of South Boston; 10 grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husbands and parents, one grandson, Mr. Kenneth Green, also preceded Mrs. Matthews in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston with the Rev. Frank E. Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Mr. Alex and Mrs. Barbara Tucker at 1213 Porter Lane, South Boston. Public viewing for family and friends will be Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.
