Ms. Flossie Hankins Hughes of 3213 Thompson Store Road, Vernon Hill died Wednesday, May 15, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 79.
Ms. Hughes was born in Pittsylvania County on Sept. 7, 1933 to the late Mr. Adam Roosevelt Hankins and Mrs. Freddie Hughes Hankins. She was a member of New Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors of Ms. Hughes include five daughters, Mrs. Freddie Fallen and husband Arthur Lee and Mrs. Dorothy Ferrell and husband James, all of Vernon Hill, Ms. Linda Palmer and husband Lawrence and Ms. Wanda Hankins and companion Mr. Darius Anderson, all of Danville and Ms. Martha Hankins of the home; one son, Mr. Adam Hankins and companion Ms. Ethel Glass of Halifax; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Helen Royal of South Boston and Mrs. Betty Richardson of Vernon Hill; one aunt, Mrs. Mary Hughes of New York; and a devoted friend, Mrs. Minnie Stephens; three devoted friends who she considered as sons-in-law, Mr. James Jennings, Mr. Lawrence Majors and Mr. Donnie Canada; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Irene Wylie and Mrs. Sallie Ferrell; and two brothers, Mr. Henry Hankins and Mr. George Hankins, also preceded Ms. Hughes in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. at New Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. John Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence.
Public viewing will be Sunday from noon until 6 p.m. at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home.
