Mrs. Elizabeth Bates Thompson of Edmunds Street, South Boston, died Thursday, July 25, at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 94.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Halifax County on Sept. 8, 1918 to the late Mr. Charlie Bates and Mrs. Rosa Jennings Bates. She was first married to the late Mr. Fred Owens and later married to the late Mr. Archie Thompson. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cheryl T. Crawley, of South Boston; two granddaughters, Mrs. Angela McFadden and husband Darryl of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Karen Ratliff and husband Tony of Hampton; three great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Altena O. Johnson; one grandson, Mr. William Lee Johnson Jr.; and two brothers, Mr. James Bates and Mr. Buster Bates.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Bates Thompson will be Sunday July 28, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 603 Edmunds Street, South Boston. Public viewing for family and friends will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
