Elna Short Burton of Halifax died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at her home. She was born in Pittsylvania County on Oct. 28, 1926 and was 86 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Lundy Short and Lena Fuller Short and was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Harrell Burton Sr.
Mrs. Burton was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Comer and husband Randolph of South Boston and Tracey Johns and husband Rick of Halifax; one son, Samuel H. Burton Jr. and wife Joyce of Halifax; three sisters, Frances Glass of South Boston, Elaine Hamlette and husband Bobby of Charlotte Court House and Joan Waller and husband Woody of Halifax; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Two sisters, Dorothy Barksdale and Lettie Conner; and four brothers, Al David Short, James Short, C.W. Short and Robert Lee Short, also preceded Mrs. Burton in death.
Funeral services will be held at Powell Funeral Home chapel Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Greg Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Winns Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. and other times at the home, 1082 Conner-Evans Trail, Alton.
