The schedule for this week’s Western Valley basketball tournaments are still up in the air, particularly when it comes to the girls tournament. Halifax County High School’s varsity girls basketball team had two regular-season games remaining to be played yesterday. The Comets were set to face Franklin County High School last night in Rocky Mount, with that game being followed by a game tonight against Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke.
Halifax County High School Athletic Director Allen Lawter said yesterday that if the Comets win both games they would tie William Fleming for first place in the district. If that happens, a playoff game between the Comets and William Fleming will be needed to determine the district champion and the district’s top seed for the Northwest Region Tournament.
Noting that nothing has been confirmed, Lawter said the playoff game could possibly be played on Friday night with the Comets playing at home Saturday night in the first-round district tournament game.
If the Comets win one of the two games, the Comets will finish second and will earn a home game in the first round of the tournament, which would start Friday.
The tournament schedule for the Comets varsity boys basketball team is pretty much settled.
If the Comets won last night’s final regular-season game here against Franklin County, they will earn third place and will face second seeded GW in Danville Thursday at 7 p.m.
On the other hand, if the Comets lost last night to Franklin County, the Comets will finish fourth and will face regular-season champion Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke Thursday at 7 p.m.
The championship game in the boys tournament will be played Saturday at the home of the highest seeded team.
