Five members of the Halifax County High School track team met or exceeded marks in Saturday’s VMI Classic High School Invitational track and field meet to qualify to compete in the upcoming Northwest Region Championship Meet. The regional qualifiers included Tanisha Evans who tied the meet record of 25.67 seconds in winning the 200-meter race. Her cousin, former Comets track standout Shamelia Brandon, had held the record.
Evans also qualified for the Northwest Region Meet in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet and 11 inches, a mark that earned her a ninth-place finish.
Tiara Wolford also qualified for the Northwest Region Meet in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet. That mark earned Wolford an eighth-place finish.
Mikayla Boyd qualified to compete in the Northwest Region Meet in the triple jump with a leap of 35-4, a mark that earned her a third-place finish.
For the boys team, Davon Greene qualified for the Northwest Region Meet in the triple jump with a jump of 44-1.
The Comets girls track team finished fifth in the meet with 56 points. Blacksburg High School won the girls meet with 86 points with Loudon Valley High School finishing second with 74.50 points.
Halifax County High School finished eighth in the boys meet with 33 points. Loudon Valley High School won the meet with 91 points with Albemarle High School finishing second with 79 points.
