The Halifax American Darlings all-stars won their Virginia Dixie Softball Darlings state tourney opener Friday in Farmville with a 17-6 win over Prince Edward-Farmville in three and one-half innings. American dispatched the host team in three and one-half innings, beginning with a big first at-bat, scoring nine runs in the first inning.
Shekeria Chandler smacked a home run to cap the first inning, while Cassidy Walker hit a double and Hailie Lawhorn, Karina Velazquez, Jeri Lynn Tyler, Kayla Walker, Savanna Cabaniss, Lauryn Chappell and Raegan Ridgeway all had singles.
Lawhorn doubled in a seven-run second inning, and Velazquez, Tyler, Walker, Cabaniss, Jessica Balducci, Karyle Dyer and Dee Dee Jeffress all collected base hits.
Halifax American got what it needed to end the contest under the mercy rule in the third inning where Balducci and Ridgeway each got a base hit that helped American score one additional run.
The game was called after Prince Edward-Farmville batted in the top of the fourth inning.
Velazquez was on the mound for Halifax American the entire game.
American played the winner of Amherst-Crewe-Burkeville last night with a shot of staying unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament.
