Savanna Cabaniss, Karina Velazquez and Kayla Walker slammed home runs, Lauryn Chappell had a 3-3 day at the plate, and the Halifax American Darlings all-stars won their second straight Virginia Dixie Softball Darlings state title with an 18-7 win over Amherst National Tuesday in Farmville. American, which completed an unbeaten run through the state tournament with Tuesday’s win, will represent Virginia at the Dixie Softball Darlings World Series starting July 31 in Denison, Texas.
American got off to blistering start Tuesday with four runs in the first inning and seven in the second to take an 11-0 lead.
Cabaniss capped the four-run first inning with her third home run of the state tournament, a three-run shot, while Hailie Lawhorn, Cassidy Walker, Chappell and Kayla Walker added base hits.
Velazquez’s three-run homer highlighted a seven-run second inning. Cassidy Walker doubled and Shekeria Chandler, Jessica Balducci, Karlye Dyer, Raegan Ridgeway, Lawhorn, Jerri Tyler and Chappell all collected base hits in the outburst which game American the 11-run lead.
Kayla Walker added a third-inning single, and neither team scored in that frame, but both Halifax American and Amherst National scored seven runs in the fourth inning, American with eight hits and Amherst with seven in the inning.
Kayla Walker hit a two-run homer for American in the fourth and Cabaniss smacked a double, while Velazquez, Lawhorn, Tyler, Dee Dee Jeffress, Chappell and Dyer added base hits.
Lawhorn was on the mound all four innings for Halifax American.
