Today ushers in a big week of baseball in South Boston and Halifax County as the community plays host to three state baseball tournaments. The Halifax County-South Boston Dixie Majors Baseball League is hosting the Virginia Dixie Majors State Tournament today at C.H. Friend Field. Action starts with the first pitch at 2 p.m.
Across town, the Day Complex will be the site of the Virginia State Junior Dixie Boys and Virginia State Dixie Boys. The Dixie Boys tournament will get underway today at noon.
Three games are on tap today in the Virginia State Dixie Boys Tournament. In today’s noon opener, Madison Heights will face Charlotte County. Bedford Metro and Carroll County will face each other at 3 p.m. In the day’s final game at 6 p.m., host Halifax County will face Pulaski.
Amelia, the other participating team in the seven-team tournament, will play its first game Saturday at 12 noon.
With only three teams competing in the Junior Dixie Boys State Tournament, there will be a single game each day of the tournament. Host Halifax County will face Carroll County today at 6:30 p.m. to kick off that tournament.
Carroll County will face Grayson County Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the tournament’s second game with Grayson County facing Halifax County Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the third game of the weekend.
Over at C.H. Friend Field, the Dixie Majors Virginia State Tournament will open with Franklin County facing Mecklenburg County in today’s 2 p.m. opener. Carroll County and Smyth County will square off at 5 p.m. At 8 p.m. tonight, host Halifax County will face Goochland.
While three state tournaments are being played here, Halifax County has teams competing in four other state tournaments that open today.
The Dixie Pre-Majors Virginia State Tournament begins Saturday in Amelia with Halifax County facing host Amelia Saturday night at 7 p.m. Win or lose, Halifax County will be idle on Sunday and will return to action on Monday in the six-team tournament.
Today also marks the start of the Dixie Youth Baseball Virginia AAA League State Tournament in Madison Heights. District 2 champion Halifax County South will play its first game today at 3 p.m. and will face the District 7 champion.
Two Dixie Softball Virginia State Tournaments open today in Farmville. The Halifax County National Ponytails will face host team Prince Edward-Farmville tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Also today, the Halifax County American Debs all-star team will face Powhatan in the opening round of the Debs state tournament. That game is set for a 4:30 p.m. start.
Regardless of whether the Debs team wins or loses today, it will face host Prince Edward-Farmville at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Local league officials urge parents and fans to support the local teams as they participate in the state tournament games.
