The Halifax County High School golf team put together a sterling performance with its round of 317 a week ago in the Western Valley District opener here at Green’s Folly Golf Course. Halifax County High School duplicated the score of 317 in Monday’s second round Western Valley District Tournament contest at Willow Creek Golf Course in Rocky Mount. However, instead of being in contention for the win, the Comets finished third.
Patrick Henry High School, which finished third in the district opener with a round of 335, overwhelmed the district field with a team total of 300 and won Monday’s second-round tournament played on the par 70 Willow Creek Golf Course.
Elijah Tackett earned medalist honors and led the Patriots with a two-under-par round of 68. Tackett got support for his effort with a round of 75 from Blake Brown, a round of 77 from Joe Jarvis and a round of 80 from Hill Donihe.
Franklin County High School, which won the district opener by a one-shot margin over Halifax County High School, finished second in Monday’s contest with a team total of 305.
Halifax County High School (317) and GW of Danville (384) rounded out the field. William Fleming High School has opted out of the team competition. The Colonels did not have any golfers competing in the opening round and had only two golfers participating in Monday’s tournament.
The Comets had a good day Monday with three players turning in scores in the 70’s. Cody Spencer led the Comets with a round of 78. Dillon Puryear and Josh Irby both carded a round of 79. Ryan Green’s round of 81 was the final score that counted towards the Comets’ team total.
Peter Gasperini carded a round of 82 and Tyler Holt came in with a round of 87. Only the four best scores from among six players are counted towards the team total.
Franklin County High School emerged from Monday’s tournament as the real winner. The defending Western Valley District champions had a one shot lead after the district opener, but now has a 13-stroke advantage after the second round.
Halifax County High School remains in second place with a 634 total, but its lead over third-place Patrick Henry High School has been trimmed to one shot. GW sits in fourth place, but is more than 100 shots out of third place.
The third round of the series of regular-season Western Valley District tournaments is set for Monday. GW will host the third-round contest.
