Former Halifax County High School softball catcher and current Virginia Tech Hokie Betty Rose played a key role in her team’s win over arch-rival Virginia with a game-tying solo home run Sunday in the Hokies’ 4-3 win over the Cavaliers.
Down 3-0 in the fourth inning, the Hokies scored four runs, beginning with a single by Rose’s former opponent and current teammate Courtney Liddle, followed by a two-run homer by Kelsey Mericka.
Rose tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run, and later a double, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly gave Tech what proved to be the game-winning run.
A junior catcher for the Hokies, Rose has appeared in all 49 games this season, and she is currently tied for third with home runs with five for the year.
She has 27 hits, including four doubles, and she has driven in 21 runs thus far this season.
Tech improved to 34-16 on the year with Sunday’s win, and the Hokies improved their ACC record to 11-6, clinching a winning record in the conference.
