A 12-run second inning gave the Halifax American Angels all-stars the lead for good in a 16-9 win over Halifax National on Sunday that gave American the Dixie Softball District 7 X-Play tournament championship.
The win was the second straight for American in the best-of-three series for the district X-Play title, coming after a 14-6 win on Saturday.
Sunday’s win came after National took a 4-1 lead after one inning.
American outscored National 12-1 in the second inning to take a 13-5 lead, but National added three runs in the third to cut to cut its deficit to 13-8.
Halifax American scored three runs in the fourth inning, and National added one run in the fifth for the final score.
Lauryn Chappell had three base hits to lead American, with one RBI, while Christia Wood slugged a solo home run.
Abby Martin and Dee Dee Jeffress each had two singles and an RBI, Kayla Walker, Aliyah Chandler and Raegan Ridgeway added two-run singles, and Kayla Townes, Lucy Settle and Amaya Mitchell each hit an RBI single for American, while Savanna Cabaniss added an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Makala Pulliam had a sacrifice RBI flyout, an RBI groundout and an RBI on a bases loaded walk for National, while Khayla Jones and Madison Vargas each hit an RBI single.
Amanda Duffer collected an RBI on a groundout, Cassidy Thompson had a base hit and Kaitlyn Richardson walked and later scored on a wild pitch for National.
Jeffress pitched one inning, Chappell three innings and Cabaniss two innings for American, with American pitching striking out nine batters.
Gracie Wagstaff and Thompson each pitched two innings for National, with National pitching striking out four American batters.
The American Angels all-stars will play in the Dixie Softball Angels X-Play state tournament, starting July 13 in Crewe-Burkeville.
