The Halifax County High School varsity girls volleyball team, behind a strong serving game and aggressive moves at the net, avenged an earlier loss at Bassett High School with a 3-0 win over the Bengals at home on Thursday.
Halifax rallied from a seven-point deficit to beat Bassett 29-27 in game one and clinched the match win with a 25-19 win in game two and a 25-20 win in game three.
Six players combined for 59 good serves against the Bengals while committing only 13 service errors, while seven Comets totaled 77 attacks at the net with a resulting 32 kills.
Halifax also had a season-high 12 blocks against Bassett but had to rally after a sluggish start to the match, according to head coach Tiffaney White.
“We started with some bad passes and had to come from a seven-point deficit in the first game,” said White.
“We rallied with a series of great sets from senior Meg Bane and spikes from senior outside hitter Jordan Miller. Sophomore Whitney White contributed several key blocks and spikes to stop the Bassett offense.”
Games two and three saw the Comets re-group mentally and play their style of volleyball, White added.
“I was very proud of the team’s ability to refocus mentally after such a bad start,” said White.
“Games two and three were highlighted by excellent blocking efforts from senior outside hitter Kelsy Williams. “Kelsy really stepped up and blocked the Bassett front line.”
