It wasn't the best of rounds, but the Halifax County High School golf team did well enough in Monday's Western Valley District Championship Golf Tournament here at the Westlake Golf & Country Club to earn a berth in next week's Northwest Region Golf Tournament.
The Comets posted a team score of 318 and finished second, 10 strokes behind district champion Franklin County High School, to take the district's second Northwest Region Tournament berth.
"The whole team hung in there," noted Comets Head Coach David Graham.
"It was an entire team effort."
Patrick Henry High School, which was the primary challenger to the Comets for the second regional tournament berth, came in third with a 338 total. GW of Danville finished fourth with a 405 team total and William Fleming High School rounded out the five-team field with a team total of 479.
With the win, Franklin County High School won its fourth straight Western Valley District championship and it's ninth district title in 12 years.
Halifax County High School's Josh Irby played his best round of the season, coming in with a two-over-par round of 74, tying him with Franklin County High School's Landon Prillaman for medalist honors.
There was no playoff to determine the tournament champion.
"I'm kind of happy because I am co-medalist, but, at the same time, I would have liked to have had a chance to win it all by myself," Irby said.
Irby had two key birdies in his round, sinking a one-foot putt for a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole and backing it up by sinking a 60-foot putt for a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole. He missed a seven-foot putt for a par on the par-5 14th hole.
"I was making the long putts all day," Irby noted.
"I was getting them real close, trying to make easy two-putts."
Along with Irby's round of 74, the Comets counted a round of 80 from Tyler Holt, a round of 81 from Peter Gasperini and a round of 83 from Ryan Green.
Joey Gasperini came in with a round of 88 and Alex Tepper carded a round of 89. Those rounds did not count as only the four best scores from among six players were counted toward the team total.
Three Comets golfers, Peter Gasperini, who was the regular-season individual champion, Irby and Holt were named to the All-Western Valley District Team.
Gasperini and Irby made the team on the basis of finishing in the top five in the regular-season individual standings. Holt was among five individuals that qualified on the basis of scores in Monday's tournament.
The Northwest Region Tournament will start Monday at Prince William Golf Club in Prince William County.
