South Boston Speedway officials have unveiled the track’s 2013 season schedule, a schedule that includes 18 events, 17 of which will feature NASCAR racing events.
The most notable changes on the track’s 2013 schedule are a change in the format of the track’s March 9 season-opening race and the addition of a Sept. 21 date for a Monster Truck show accompanied by a fireworks show at the conclusion of the event.
South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice said the track is moving from a 300-lap event for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division for the March 9 season opener to a Twin 100’s Late Model Stock Car event and bringing in the track’s two support divisions, the Limited Sportsman and Pure Stock Divisions, to go with it.
The season-opening Danville Toyota NASCAR Whelen Late Model Twin 100s will pay $2,500 to the winner of each of the two 100-lap races, making it possible for a driver to take home $5,000 for a sweep of the two races.
“We’re going to pay $5,000 to win, and split it down the middle so that the winner of each race will receive $2,500,” Rice explained.
“For a driver to win $2,500 for winning a 100-lap race is a pretty good payday.”
Rice said track officials made the decision to go with a new format for the 2013 season-opener after having reviewed the car count and other factors from last year’s 300-lap season opening NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race.
“We made the change based upon support (car counts),” Rice explained.
“We looked at what we had been doing the last two to three years and decided to make a change. We had been getting 40 or more cars for the big race, then the number dropped into the thirties and last year, we had 20-plus when we moved the big race to the start of the season.
“The numbers kept dwindling,” Rice added, “so we decided to look at doing something different. This is what we came up with.”
Rice said track officials also felt bringing the track’s Limited Sportsman and Pure Stock Divisions into action early in the season would be a positive move.
“Last year their first race wasn’t until April,” Rice noted.
Six special racing events are planned for the 2013 season. Among them are the season-opening Twin 100’s Late Model Stock Car race, a 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race on April 13, the track’s annual pre-Fourth of July event on July 3, featuring a 200-lap Late Model Stock Car race and fireworks, and three races for the touring PASS Super Late Model Series (May 11, June 8, Aug. 17).
South Boston Speedway’s 2013 schedule includes 24 points races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division and 15 points races for both the Limited Sportsman and Pure Stock Divisions.
As far as fans go, Rice said the track will not increase its admission prices for the 2013 season, and that the track will keep the price of 2013 season tickets at $150 each.
“We have always strived to keep our admission prices and our season ticket prices as affordable as possible for our fans,” Rice said.
“We will keep our admission prices the same for next season, and fans purchasing season tickets will actually be getting an extra race next season for the same price as we have scheduled one more event than we did this past season.”
Rice said the track plans to do a variety of promotions during the 2013 season.
“We’re looking at doing several different things, things like a car load night, a military night and a public service night and that sort of thing,” Rice said.
“We’re looking at different things to involve both fans and competitors.”
