Celebrants of this nation’s birthday are set to enjoy an evening of music and fellowship, capped off with fireworks, as the town of South Boston puts on its third annual Fourth of July extravaganza.
A parade through downtown South Boston begins the day’s activities starting at 6 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
Destination Downtown South Boston is sponsoring the Fourth of July celebration and still seeks participants for the parade.

Admission to the Fourth of July event is free, and it features music from Ray Martin from 7-7:50 p.m. and the Forever Young Band from 8-8:50 p.m.
The Prizery Summer Theatre will provide patriotic music from 9-9:30 p.m., with fireworks to follow courtesy of Francisco Display Fireworks, LLC dba Virginia Skypainters.
Activities for children including bounce houses, face-painting and glow items, in addition to Magic by Marlo will be offered during the evening.
Celebrants will have a choice of food options including Hardman’s Smoke Stack with barbecue pork, chicken, ribs and brisket, catfish, hot wings, piggy fries and sides.
Kona Ice is offering shaved ice, The Worship Center is offering pizza and glow items, and Kool Treatz is offering hot dogs, fries and chicken tenders.
Byler’s Handmade Ice Cream will be on hand, as well as Exquisite Events and Poppa Bear’s Kettle Corn.
Independence Day sponsors include county of Halifax and town of South Boston; Red, White and Blue sponsors is Fairfield by Marriott; and firecracker sponsors are Huber Engineered Woods and Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative.
