  • NAACP MEETING: The Halifax/South Boston NAACP Branch, Unit 7074, will meet at Post 99 at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Masks are required and there will be social distancing. President Barbara C. Brown will be presiding.


  • HCHS JROTC HOSTING VETERAN’S DAY CEREMONY: The Halifax County High School JROTC will be hosting a Veteran’s Day ceremony at the high school on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. The public is invited. This year’s ceremony will be unique in that the ceremony will highlight each service and recount the wars the nation has fought. The JROTC department is asking for pictures of county veterans in uniform to be projected during the ceremony. Each picture submission should include name, rank and the years of service, and could include information about combat action such as Battle of the Bulge or Korean War, etc. The pictures, if digital, can be sent to the JROTC instructor, Paper copies can be dropped off at the school. In addition to the above picture information, also include a name and phone number. Residents will be contacted when the photo is ready for to pick up. 


  • LAUREL GROVE VOLUNTEER FIRE & RESCUE: The group will host a fish and chicken dinner fundraiser on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at 2081 Laurel Grove Road in Sutherlin. To-go plates will be available. Meals include fish or chicken, hush puppies, baked potato, slaw, beverage and dessert. Plates will be $12 for adults and children plates will be $5. 
  • MT. LAUREL RURITAN CLUB STEW: The Ruritan Club will sponsor a stew on Saturday. The stew will sell for $6 per quart and ready at 11 a.m. Call Saturday to order, 454-6520. Drive-thru pickup only.
  • VIRGILINA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT. STEW:  The stew will be on Saturday and ready at 10 a.m.  The cost is $7 per quart. Pre-orders can be placed by calling Ralph Murray 585-2657, Town and Country Beauty Shop at 585-2682, Jason and Michelle Johnson at 585-3540 or Phillip Poole at 919-482-9961. Orders may be faxed to 434-585-2222 until 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8.  Mention where order will be picked up: South Boston Farmer’s Market or Virgilina Fire Department. Pre-orders will only be taken for the first 600 quarts. After that customers will be placed on a waiting list. South Boston orders will be delivered to the Farmers Market on Broad Street from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Nov. 13. All pre-orders need to be picked up between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday at the fire station. If not, they will be sold after noon on first-come basis at the fire station.


  • NORTH HALIFAX LADIES AUXILIARY SPAGHETTI LUNCHEON: The auxiliary will sponsor a spaghetti luncheon on Sunday. Serving begins at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $10 for adults. Menu consists of spaghetti, side salad, garlic toast, bottled water and homemade dessert. The event is take-out only.

  • FOOD AND CLOTHING: The Good Samaritan, located at 1145 Tobacco Road, Nathalie, offers free food and clothing Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon. No appointment is necessary. Clients must show an ID and may visit The Good Samaritan once a month. Clothing is available in all sizes for men, women, children and infants. Shoes, belts and purses are available, as well. Included in the food giveaway are prepackaged bags of canned meats and vegetables, grains, fruits and powdered milk.
