The town of South Boston hosted a retirement reception Wednesday at the Washington Coleman Community Center in honor of Jane P. Daniel. More than 100 people including members of the town council and former co-workers came out to show their support of their beloved town clerk.
Her career started as a secretary to public works on Feb. 17, 1975. She quickly moved into a position in August of 1975 as a secretary to Town Manager Aubrey Houghton.
She then moved into the position as town clerk in 1993. She was later promoted to the position of town clerk/assistant to the town manager in 1998. She has worked for four town managers in her career. She has performed her tasks as support to the current Town Manager Thomas Raab since 2016.
Daniel continued her education and any specialized training to provide the best quality of guidance to her colleagues and the citizens of South Boston.
She handled many tasks and was a true team player throughout her career. She worked with all departments at the town in her role.
She oversaw the development and implementation of the town’s new payroll computer system, she was a benefits coordinator and payroll clerk in addition to her full time town clerk/assistant to the town manager duties.
She made unmeasurable contributions to the IDA and service authority as a recording secretary.
Her judgement was trusted by town managers and town council. Not only did she perform tasks for the town inside and outside of her required role, she also volunteered and served on boards for many committees. She spent many hours outside of work serving on boards to assist the South Boston museum and the South Boston library.
