The South Boston Centennial Steering Committee buried a centennial time capsule in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Saturday, Oct. 20, 1984.
The capsule is to be opened on, or soon after, Feb. 19, 2034.
At that time the contents will be made public and heirs of the vault’s contents, which have been addressed to certain people will be delivered.
The South Boston Town Council will evaluate and retain all items marked “Various and Sundry” or give them to the South Boston Museum so that the museum may dispose of them as they see fit.
The committee asked members of the community to contribute items for the capsule. A list of the items is being kept in the South Boston Public Library and the city offices, according to news reports in 1984. Powell’s Funeral Home donated a vault for storage of items.
Items included were social, scientific, educational or everyday usage, household items, brochures, tape recordings, photographs and toys. A 1984 dollar and a 1984 penny were included as well as a homemade biscuit that was sealed in an air-tight container.
Artifacts about Main Street United Methodist Church, which was celebrating its 100th birthday were also included. Citizens were encouraged to submit an envelope addressed to a certain person with family photos and written texts of their family history.
