Back for the second year, the Hay Bale Decorating Contest will take place at the Halifax County Fair that gets underway Oct. 1-5.
“This is an exciting opportunity for any non-profit organization or business connected to agriculture, youth or a community initiative to showcase its presence and impact at the fair,” said Halifax Extension agent Rebekah Slabach.
Each group that registers will receive a round hay bale to decorate to represent its theme for the week.
Entries will be judged on construction and materials used, creativity and eye appeal, as well as message or theme displayed.
Winners will be awarded as follows: first place - $75, second place - $50, third place - $25, as well as a special People’s Choice Award given to the group whose picture receives the most “likes” on the Halifax County Fair’s facebook page.
In addition, Virginia Cooperative Extension may help enter hay bales to also be participants in the Virginia Farm Bureau hay bale decorating contest that is also taking place this fall across the state.
The 2018 winners included the following: first place – Halifax County Middle School FFA, second place – Halifax County Veterinary Center and third place – Halifax County Cattlemen’s Association.
Each group should decorate their respective hay bale in a wholesome manner that promotes or showcases its theme or mission relative to the community and people of Halifax, Slabach said. Each organization must also display a sign that includes the name of the organization or business in Halifax County.
Organizations or businesses must request or submit a registration form to participate. Once received, each group will receive further instructions and details.
Decorating may take place from Saturday, Sept. 28, – Monday, Sept. 30, before the fair officially opens on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Judging will take place on Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, with all hay bales decorated and ready for the week of the Halifax County Fair.
