Halifax County High School students recently competed in the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation District’s Area V Envirothon competition on the campus of Sweet Briar College in Amherst County.

Area V includes 10 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the Southern Piedmont of Virginia, including the Halifax SWCD.

The Envirothon is a statewide high school competition consisting of field-based test stations that cover aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and current environmental issues.

Teams compete in both written and hands-on test exercises with the top three overall teams from the area competition going on to compete at the state Envirothon competition held every year.

Dominion Power is the primary sponsor for the Envirothon in Virginia.

This year’s team representing HCHS was comprised completely of first-year Envirothon members.

In the Area V competition, the HCHS team placed first in aquatics, second in wildlife, tied for second in forestry, and placed third in the current issue category.
