It’s almost time for the second annual 5k Fun Run and Walk hosted by the Virginia Family Nutrition Program and the Halifax Farmers Market on Saturday at the market starting at 9 a.m.
There is no charge, but registration is required. The last day to pre-register is Thursday.
The first 30 participants to register will receive a free pedometer, sponsored by Optima Health.
Race packets can be picked up at 171 South Main Street, Halifax, VA 24558.
Many agencies have teamed up with the Family Nutrition Program and Halifax Farmers Market to make it a fun filled Saturday with healthy activities for the community.
Virginia Tech/Extension Family Nutrition staff, social media and marketing strategist project assistant for human nutrition, food and exercise and coordinator of food access and availability initiative will be on site along with the local YMCA and Healthy Harvest Community Garden to offer information and resources for healthier lifestyles.
Virginia Tech Virginia Cooperative Extension Austin Brooks MS, RDN, family nutrition program assistant, and Alyssa Mako, social media human nutrition, food and exercise (EFNEP-SNAP-Ed) will be live streaming the event.
Denise Hamlett of Helping Hands Adult Care LLC located in Roxboro, North Carolina, will be on site with free blood pressure and blood sugar testing.
The Family Nutrition Program will be set up hosting a healthy food demonstration with samples and recipes available.
In addition to the 5K event, there will be a scavenger hunt and coloring sheets for the youth as well as a market tour event.

An event celebration will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Jan. 25 with all event finishers and volunteers receiving their event T-shirt and prizes.
All event sponsors and community supporters are invited to attend the celebration event.
