Halifax Farmers Market held its first annual kids day Saturday. The event included the first “mining for gems” activity for kids. For $6 youngsters 6 and under could mine for 10 different gems. Once they were able to find all of those and turn in their mining bucket, they each received a prize bag consisting of a mineral guide, seven tiny polished gems and a magnifying glass. The Southside Master Gardeners assisted youngsters in planting up flowers for mom, and Staunton River Battlefield State Park had a display on birds, and participants got to make up a pinecone bird feeder. On June 8, the Southside Master Gardeners will be back hosting the Fairy Garden Contest, and Staunton River Battlefield State Park will host a “Feelin’ Fishy” workshop.
