The Halifax Woman’s Club had its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 9, at Beth Car Baptist Church.
Club President Barbara Speece welcomed everyone, presented general announcements, and also welcomed any guests of club members. She then introduced Ben Woosley, who was going to provide the entertainment for the meeting.
He played a selection of moving and beautiful songs and hymns.
The woman’s club then presented this year’s scholarship recipient, Madison Marie Combs. Combs and her mother Mary Combs were both present for the meeting. The scholarship committee of Linda Lovelace and Becky Donner introduced the women, and then gave the club all the ways that Combs was the perfect recipient this year.
Combs will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall and plans to major in veterinary science, a goal she set for herself as a child. She said she has always loved animals and loved learning facts about them in National Geographic magazine articles. She volunteers at the Pittsylvania animal center and also helps a farm-handler once a month with the farm animals in order to learn more.
Combs has a 3.8 grade point average and is one of the peer mediators at Halifax County High School. This past year, she was also the stage manager for the Virginia High School League One Act Play Competition for HCHS.
“Everything Madison does is with a smile, a polite demeanor, and with appreciation for those who help out,” Donner said.
The women at the meeting all filled in slips of paper for Combs about their best life advice and dropped them in a decorated jar for Combs to take away with her for inspiration for the year.
The meeting was followed by a luncheon provided by the club members where each one would have a chance to meet and chat individually with Madison and her mother to wish them well. The meeting was then adjourned, with the next meeting being the first fall meeting in September.
