The Fry, Jordan & Wilson/Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation Veteran of the Month for August is Joe Green.
Green was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 14, 1941, at the age of 21. He served on the front lines as an ambulance driver for Company C, 9th Medical Battalion during World War II.
Their positions were always changing so his driving took place in Normandy, Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Central Europe, the Ardennes and the Rhineland.
He stated it was very hard driving at night on roads he was not familiar because they could not use their headlights.
During his deployment, his father passed away, and he was unable to return for his funeral.
He was honorably discharged, Aug. 7, 1945.
Green returned to Halifax County and eventually owned his own printing company.
He will be celebrating his 101st birthday, Saturday, Aug. 29.
He was married to the late Gladys Perkins Green. They have a daughter, Pam, and a son, Steve.
