The Fry, Jordan and Wilson/Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation August Veteran of the Month is Ray Waller.
Waller was 25 years old and married when he received his draft orders. He and his wife, Effie, had to sell their home and car they had recently purchased.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He was deployed to Vietnam with the 616th Medical Company as motor sergeant.
His responsibilities included keeping the medical unit vehicles equipped and properly operating at all times.
Upon his return from Vietnam, he took a job in Pennsylvania. He returned to Halifax County in 1972. He and his brother took over the family farm that is known today as Waller Brothers Farms.
He and Effie have one daughter, Kristie.
