The Halifax County Historical Society has a new publication, “Schools from the Past, Halifax County, Virginia.”
In 1976, a notebook containing approximately 135 black and white school photographs taken in Halifax County was presented to Andrew Bohanon to make copies. This not being the age of digital imaging, he had to resort to film. Using a 35mm camera, a copy stand and Kodak Ektachrome slide film, he was able to copy all the photographs to slide film. Twenty years later the original photographs were lost. Former students who attended these schools began requesting copies. In 2005, he decided to digitize the slide film and make CDs of the collection.
Some schools were named, some incorrectly, and others were not named. Photographs date back to the early 1930s. An effort was made to find names for all; however, it has been an almost impossible task.
Members of the Halifax County Historical Society wishes to thank Bohanon, a member of the society board, for preserving these photographs and believes it is important to share them knowing there might be errors. It is hoped that readers who purchase a copy will contact the society with any errors found. This edition is a limited one with the society hoping to hear from members of the community regarding any additional information.
The book is on sale at the South Boston-Halifax County Visitor Center in South Boston and Peddler’s Market in Halifax.
