Ten students from the Halifax County School System recently completed a horticultural internship at the Southern Virginia Botanical Gardens and Environmental Education Center at Edmunds Park.

Over the course of the summer, interns each spent 75 hours working in the Healthy Harvest Community Garden picking and processing vegetables for distribution to area food pantries, housing communities and SNAP recipients.

They also learned about sustainable agriculture, pest and weed control, drip irrigation as well as care of the main display gardens and lawns.

For all this hard work, they received a $600 scholarship to put toward their future endeavors.

Interns were supervised by Sheri Love, HHCG garden manager, who noted, “Everyone worked so well together, even in the heat. They were a great crew.”
