The public is invited to celebrate ‘Mater Sammich Day at the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market on Saturday.

“Summer is the season for perfect, sun-ripened tomatoes bursting with flavor, and our farmer vendors have them grown fresh for you,” said Market Manager Ben Capozzi.

“We have hundreds of delicious tomatoes and several varieties ready to find their way to a tomato sandwich near you. From Beef Steak to Cherokee Purple, come enjoy the awesome flavors that beat the daylights out of bland, store-bought and fast food tomatoes,” he added.

“We’ll have tasting tables with free samples of many different tomato varieties, and the market encourages folks to come by, pick up tomatoes and bread (or bring your own), some mayonnaise, a little salt and enjoy making your own sandwich as you picnic at the market,” Capozzi said.

Market vendors also will be joined by returning food truck, Mama Crockett’s Cider Donuts. This popular vendor from Lynchburg has earned a fanatical following throughout southern Virginia and even into North Carolina.

“Come load up on delicious donuts and apple cider,” Capozzi said.
