Bill McCaleb, Halifax County Extension master gardener program coordinator (right), presents Kevin Neal, principal of Meadville Elementary School with seed for the students. There were over 3,500 vegetable seed packs distributed by Halifax County’s Southside Master Gardeners to students in Halifax County schools and to Clarksville Elementary School. The seed was donated by Lowe’s of South Boston. Normally, each year, the SSMGA does a presentation of the life of a plant at the Halifax County Fair, but with COVID-19 this past year that was not possible. As the seed was distributed by the master gardeners, the students were encouraged to plant the vegetable seeds and supply pictures to show their progress. The goal is to instill the love of gardening in the students at an early age and help them know how to raise fresh vegetables. Master gardeners also remind the public to visit the Master Gardener Plant Sale from 7:30 a.m. to noon on May 7.
