The 15th Annual Walk for Hope is planned for Saturday at the Halifax County fairgrounds, and the public is urged to make plans to come out and support the cancer patients in Halifax County by raising funds to assist with gas vouchers, meals for patients as they travel outside of Halifax County for cancer-related appointments, medication assistance, medical bills, bras, wigs, nutritional supplements and many other items.
Registration for the walk starts at 8 a.m. when community members can donate funds to benefit the patients.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. with the JROTC presenting colors and Kristen Wellons singing the National Anthem. Cancer survivors will take the first lap at about 9:15 a.m., as they are honored and celebrated.
The Walk for Hope is the largest fundraiser of the Halifax County Cancer Association, according to Sharon Blosser, HCCA director.
Each year for the Walk for Hope, T-shirts are made to commemorate the event. When a person raises $100 or more, they receive a “Walk For Hope” T-shirt, and people enjoy the T-shirts for many years, Blosser said.
“You may remember that the 2018 Walk for Hope was cancelled due to the projection that Hurricane Florence would come through Halifax County. Due to this fact a large number of 2018 T-shirts remain. Anyone who would like to purchase a 2018 T-shirt to support the cancer patients of Halifax County may do so at the HCCA office located at 29 South Main Street in Halifax,” said Blosser.
The office is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, or the T-shirts may be purchased at the Walk for Hope on Saturday at the fairgrounds. The 2018 T-shirts are $15 each, and only 2018 T-shirts will be sold.
To receive a 15th Annual 2019 Walk For Hope T-shirt, persons will need to raise or donate $100 or more, Blosser said.
As an individual or a team, persons may support a family member, friend and or a loved one battling cancer that lives in Halifax County by forming a team (no team is too large and can be a school, church, neighborhood, work place, etc.).
“Raise as much as you can, and half of everything you and your team raises will be used to assist your chosen recipient with their cancer related medical bills, mortgage, rent, electric, water, heating or oil bill in patients or legal guardian’s name,” she added.
“The other half of funds you raise will go to support all cancer patients in Halifax County who receive services from Halifax County Cancer Association with items such as gas vouchers for travel, medication assistance, nutritional supplements, wigs, bras and other cancer related expenses,” Blosser added.
