Charges in a deadly March shooting at Westside Village Apartments in South Boston have been certified to a grand jury.
Online court records indicate a Halifax County General District Court judge advanced the charges against 24-year-old Rashad Stovall on Monday. Stovall is facing counts of second-degree murder, possession of a firearm after being convicted of a violent felony and use of a firearm in the commission of murder.
A grand jury will determine if thereās enough evidence for an indictment. If that happens, then the case will move into the trial phase.
It was shortly before 11:30 p.m. March 31 when officers responded to the shooting at the apartments on Sinai Road. When they arrived, police found 32-year-old Lamar Ballou, of South Boston, dead. The body was discovered in the parking lot near Building 9 at the complex.
āHe appeared to be shot multiple times,ā South Boston Police Chief Bryan L. Young said in a news release at the time. āInvestigators believe Ballou was involved in a physical altercation with at least two other individuals immediately prior to him being shot.ā
Investigators talked with several neighbors in the area and numerous empty pistol cartridges were located at the scene.
Stovall was apprehended at a home in Chesapeake without incident days later.
Authorities credit the public for helping to identify and locate Stovall.
āThis incident highlights the importance of the public working alongside of the police,ā Young said previously. āWe want to thank the community for all of their help. There is no limit to what we can accomplish when we all work together to safeguard our community.ā
The suspect is being held without bond in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority in Halifax.
